Hypertension, commonly referred to as "high blood pressure", is a medical condition in which the blood pressure is chronically elevated. While it is formally called arterial hypertension, the word "hypertension" without a qualifier usually refers to arterial hypertension. Hypertension has been associated with a higher risk of heart attack or stroke.
Quinapril belongs to the class of medications called ACE inhibitors. It is used for the treatment of high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. It works by relaxing blood vessels and by making the heart pump more efficiently. Quinapril may be used in addition to diuretics (water pills) known as thiazide diuretics (e.g., hydrochlorothiazide) when one medication has not been found to control blood pressure satisfactorily.
SPIRONOLACTONE (Aldactone®) is a diuretic. Diuretics increase the amount of urine passed, which causes the body to lose water and salt. Spironolactone helps to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is not a cure. It also reduces the swelling and water retention caused by various medical conditions, such as heart, liver, or kidney disease.
ALTACE (Ramipril) is a type of medicine called an ACE inhibitor. ACE stands for angiotensin-converting enzyme. It is a chemical compound that helps create a protein named angiotensin II. Angiotensin II can raise blood pressure by causing your blood vessels to narrow. ALTACE® helps lower your blood pressure by decreasing the amount of ACE your body makes.
CANDESARTAN (Atacand®) lowers elevated blood pressure. High blood pressure levels can cause you to have a stroke, get heart failure, or damage your kidneys. Candesartan helps prevent these things from happening.
IRBESARTAN (Avapro) is used for treating high blood pressure. It may be used alone or with other blood pressure medicines. It is also used for treating kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes.
CAPTOPRIL (Capoten®) is an antihypertensive (blood pressure lowering agent) known as an ACE inhibitor. Captopril controls high blood pressure (hypertension) by relaxing blood vessels; it is not a cure. High blood pressure levels can damage your kidneys, and may lead to a stroke or heart failure. Captopril also can help to treat heart failure (heart does not pump strongly enough) and certain kidney disorders.
DOXAZOSIN (Cardura) is used for treating high blood pressure and treating signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Doxazosin is an alpha-blocker. It works by relaxing muscles in the blood vessels resulting in lowering of blood pressure.
LOSARTAN (Cozaar) is used for treating high blood pressure. It is also used to reduce the risk of stroke in certain patients with high blood pressure and for treating kidney disease in certain patients with type 2 diabetes.
VALSARTAN (Diovan®) helps lower blood pressure to normal levels. It controls high blood pressure, but it is not a cure. High blood pressure can damage your kidneys, and may lead to a stroke or heart failure. Valsartan helps prevent these things from happening.
TERAZOSIN (Hytrin®) is an antihypertensive. Terazosin lowers, but does not cure, high blood pressure. It works by relaxing the blood vessels. Terazosin is sometimes used for prostate problems.
METOPROLOL (Lopressor) is used for treating high blood pressure, alone or with other medicines; long-term treatment of chest pain; and reducing the risk of death because of heart problems in patients who have had a heart attack. Lopressor is a beta-adrenergic blocking agent ("beta-blocker"). It works by reducing the amount of work the heart has to do (reduces chest pain) and the amount of blood the heart pumps out (lowers high blood pressure). It is also used to stabilize the heart rhythm in conditions in which the heart is beating too fast or at an irregular rhythm.
BENAZEPRIL (Lotensin) is used for treating high blood pressure. It may be used alone or with other blood pressure medicines. Benazepril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It works by decreasing a chemical that tightens blood vessels. This causes the blood vessels to relax (dilate), which lowers blood pressure.
INDAPAMIDE (Lozol®) is a diuretic. Diuretics increase the amount of urine passed, which causes the body to lose water and salt. Indapamide helps to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is not a cure. It also reduces the swelling and water retention caused by various medical conditions, such as heart, liver, or kidney disease.
MEXILETINE (Mexitil®) is an antiarrhythmic agent. Mexiletine treats irregular heart rhythm and can slow rapid heartbeats (tachycardia). Mexiletine can help your heart to return to and maintain a normal rhythm.
PRAZOSIN (Minipress®) is an antihypertensive. Prazosin lowers, but does not cure, high blood pressure. It works by relaxing the blood vessels. Prazosin is sometimes used for prostate problems.
AMLODIPINE (Norvasc) is used for treating high blood pressure and angina (chest pain). It may be used alone or with other medicines. Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker. It works by relaxing (dilating) your blood vessels, lowering blood pressure, and decreasing heart rate, which lowers the workload on the heart. It also dilates coronary arteries increasing blood flow to the heart.
CLOPIDOGREL (Plavix) is used for reducing the risk of stroke or heart attack in patients who have already had a heart attack or stroke, or have other circulatory problems due to narrowing and hardening of the arteries.
Clopidogrel is a platelet aggregation inhibitor. It works by slowing or stopping platelets from sticking to blood vessel walls or injured tissues.
FELODIPINE (Plendil®) is a calcium-channel blocker. It affects the amount of calcium found in your heart and muscle cells. This results in relaxation of blood vessels, which can reduce the amount of work the heart has to do. Felodipine reduces high blood pressure (hypertension). It is not a cure.
ATENOLOL (Tenormin) is used for decreasing death due to heart problems after a heart attack. Atenolol is a beta-blocker. Exactly how Atenolol works to decrease heart problems after a heart attack is not known.
ENALAPRILAT (Vasotec® IV) is an antihypertensive (blood pressure lowering agent) known as an ACE inhibitor. Enalaprilat controls high blood pressure (hypertension) by relaxing blood vessels; it is not a cure. High blood pressure levels can damage your kidneys, and may lead to a stroke or heart failure. Enalaprilat also helps to treat patients with congestive heart failure (heart does not pump strongly enough).
BISOPROLOL (Zebeta®) belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers reduce the workload on the heart and help it to beat more regularly. Bisoprolol controls, but does not cure, high blood pressure (hypertension). Bisoprolol may also be used to improve symptoms in patients with heart disease.
A generic drug (pl. generic drugs, short: generics) is a drug which is produced and distributed without patent protection. A generic must contain the same active ingredients as the original formulation. In most cases, it is considered bioequivalent to the brand name counterpart with respect to pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. By extension, therefore, generics are assumed to be identical in dose, strength, route of administration, safety, efficacy, and intended use.
Facts about generic drugs
It is the chemical compound that makes up drug.
It is manufactured in strict compliance within th FDA guidelines.
It costs less because they don't have to spend R&D advertising.
It works identical to brand name Drugs to treat a medical condition.
Generic drugs generally cost 30-50% less then the equivalent.
Half of all prescription drugs have generic equivalents.
By asking your pharmacist for generics, you may save a lot.
