Heart disease is any of several abnormalities of the heart and its function in maintaining blood circulation. Heart disease is the cause of approximately half the deaths in the United States each year. Among the most common causes of heart disease are degenerative changes in the coronary blood vessels, infectious diseases, and congenital heart disease. Congenital defects result from abnormal development of the fetal heart, commonly in the valves or septa. Infectious diseases acquired after birth, such as rheumatic fever, syphilis, and endocarditis, can also damage the valves of the heart. In addition, the heart muscle itself can be affected: hypertensive heart disease can cause it to enlarge, and it can become inflamed by rheumatic fever.

It works by relaxing (dilating) your blood vessels, lowering blood pressure, and decreasing heart rate, which lowers the workload on the heart. It also dilates coronary arteries increasing blood flow to the heart.
ALTACE (Ramipril) is a type of medicine called an ACE inhibitor. ACE stands for angiotensin-converting enzyme. It is a chemical compound that helps create a protein named angiotensin II. Angiotensin II can raise blood pressure by causing your blood vessels to narrow. ALTACE® helps lower your blood pressure by decreasing the amount of ACE your body makes.
CAPTOPRIL (Capoten®) is an antihypertensive (blood pressure lowering agent) known as an ACE inhibitor. Captopril controls high blood pressure (hypertension) by relaxing blood vessels; it is not a cure. High blood pressure levels can damage your kidneys, and may lead to a stroke or heart failure. Captopril also can help to treat heart failure (heart does not pump strongly enough) and certain kidney disorders.
VALSARTAN (Diovan®) helps lower blood pressure to normal levels. It controls high blood pressure, but it is not a cure. High blood pressure can damage your kidneys, and may lead to a stroke or heart failure. Valsartan helps prevent these things from happening.
PROPRANOLOL (Inderal®) works by slowing down the heart and reducing blood pressure, which helps it pump more efficiently and reduces the workload on the heart. It may also interfere with the action of adrenalin and other similar chemicals in the brain preventing migraine headaches.
BENAZEPRIL (Lotensin) is used for treating high blood pressure. It may be used alone or with other blood pressure medicines. Benazepril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It works by decreasing a chemical that tightens blood vessels. This causes the blood vessels to relax (dilate), which lowers blood pressure.
CLOPIDOGREL (Plavix) is used for reducing the risk of stroke or heart attack in patients who have already had a heart attack or stroke, or have other circulatory problems due to narrowing and hardening of the arteries.

ATENOLOL (Tenormin) is used for decreasing death due to heart problems after a heart attack. Atenolol is a beta-blocker. Exactly how Atenolol works to decrease heart problems after a heart attack is not known.
ENALAPRILAT (Vasotec® IV) is an antihypertensive (blood pressure lowering agent) known as an ACE inhibitor. Enalaprilat controls high blood pressure (hypertension) by relaxing blood vessels; it is not a cure. High blood pressure levels can damage your kidneys, and may lead to a stroke or heart failure. Enalaprilat also helps to treat patients with congestive heart failure (heart does not pump strongly enough).
ATROPINE (Atropen®) auto-injection can help treat many emergency conditions. For example, administration of atropine can help treat certain symptoms (such as low heart rate, breathing problems, excess saliva) related to insecticide, nerve gas or mushroom poisoning.
AMIODARONE (Cordarone®) is an antiarrhythmic agent and is used to help your heart to beat regularly. Because this drug can have significant side-effects, this is a medicine that is used when irregular heartbeats have not responded to other medicines. It is usually reserved for treating potentially life-threatening heartbeat problems.
DILTIAZEM (Cardizem®) is a calcium-channel blocker. It affects the amount of calcium found in your heart and muscle cells. This results in relaxation of blood vessels, which can reduce the amount of work the heart has to do. Diltiazem injection steadies and slows a fast, uneven heart rate.
ISOSORBIDE MONONITRATE (Ismo™, Imdur®, Monoket®) is a type of vasodilator. It relaxes blood vessels, increasing the blood and oxygen supply to your heart. It is effective in the long-term treatment of angina associated with coronary artery disease.
METOPROLOL (Lopressor) is used for treating high blood pressure, alone or with other medicines; long-term treatment of chest pain; and reducing the risk of death because of heart problems in patients who have had a heart attack. Lopressor is a beta-adrenergic blocking agent ("beta-blocker"). It works by reducing the amount of work the heart has to do (reduces chest pain) and the amount of blood the heart pumps out (lowers high blood pressure). It is also used to stabilize the heart rhythm in conditions in which the heart is beating too fast or at an irregular rhythm.
MEXILETINE (Mexitil®) is an antiarrhythmic agent. Mexiletine treats irregular heart rhythm and can slow rapid heartbeats (tachycardia). Mexiletine can help your heart to return to and maintain a normal rhythm.
DIPYRIDAMOLE (Persantine®) helps to diagnose possible blockage to the blood vessels that supply your heart. It shows how well blood is flowing to your heart and can help your prescriber or health care professional to decide the best treatment.
BISOPROLOL (Zebeta®) belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers reduce the workload on the heart and help it to beat more regularly. Bisoprolol controls, but does not cure, high blood pressure (hypertension). Bisoprolol may also be used to improve symptoms in patients with heart disease.
